Japanese Youth Receive Heartwarming Family Surprise Upon Big City Arrival

Personalized, Uplifting Messages Delivered Using iBeacon Technology

TOKYO, JAPAN--(Marketwired - Mar 20, 2015) - KDDI Corporation, a major Japanese communications company, released a new heartwarming documentary video, "SYNC YELL," which features three young people leaving home for the first time to follow their dreams in the capital city of Tokyo, marking a Japanese springtime tradition. The documentary video is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyKXPOg7MZ4 and the company's promotion website at http://connect.kddi.com/syncyell/.

The SYNC YELL movie documents the bittersweet moments and challenges three people face with saying goodbye to family and friends, as well as highlighting the adventures ahead in a young person's life when leaving home for the first time. Each spring, a surge of young people migrate from their hometowns to the big city to pursue their dreams and aspirations. This seasonal phenomenon marks a traditional period of farewell in Japan, as it is the first time that many will part with their families, friends, and other loved ones.

Filmed in early March 2015, the SYNC YELL movie is just under five-minutes long and captures the youth's mixed feelings of anticipation and uncertainty experienced upon leaving home and arriving at a major railway station in Tokyo. As they approach a large video screen at the station, they are surprised and delighted by a video message that suddenly appears, showing their friends and families back home cheering them on. The video captures the raw emotion, from initial shock and astonishment, to gathering the strength and courage to succeed in Tokyo because of their loved ones' heartfelt messages.

The SYNC YELL campaign utilized iBeacon positioning system technology. Using iBeacon technology on the youth's smartphones, the production team signaled a video screen positioned outside the station through proximity sensors when they became physically close, prompting the personalized messages to appear.

Even the video production staff was moved. According to the spokesperson, "The warm, authentic messages from the families and friends of our three young people turned out to be very heartwarming, and also moved our staff during filming. They made us realize that no matter how far away our loved ones may be, it's possible to be connected through messages."
