Fish & Richardson Principal John Adkisson Profiled in National Law Journal's "Twin Cities Counsel to Counsel" Report

MINNEAPOLIS, MN--(Marketwired - Apr 16, 2015) -  Fish & Richardson today announced that John Adkisson, a Principal in the firm's Twin Cities office, was featured recently in National Law Journal's "Twin Cities Counsel to Counsel" Report, which highlights Twin Cities attorneys who serve as outside counsel to some of the top in-house legal teams to companies in the area. Adkisson was one of eight Twin Cities attorneys featured in the report for his work handling "high-stakes patent litigation" for 3M Company.

Adkisson has successfully litigated more than 20 patent and trademark cases for 3M since 2001. According to Kevin Rhodes, 3M's chief intellectual property (IP) counsel, Adkisson combines sound legal judgment with strategic thinking and is entrusted with the company's "most significant IP litigation matters."

In 2013, Adkisson helped settle the company's hard-fought battle with Avery Dennison Corp. over reflective sheeting technology, which accounts for about 35 percent of 3M's durable sheeting products business. The settlement resolved two patent infringement cases -- which involved 13 3M patents throughout the course of the litigation -- and an accompanying antitrust case.

Adkisson also helped author the briefs for the 3M v. Avery Dennison appeal, which led to a precedent-setting U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruling in 2012. The ruling clarified the law about what allows a party to file a declaratory-judgment case, which asks the court to rule that the plaintiff is not infringing a patent, and continues to be cited today.

At Fish, Adkisson specializes in patent infringement litigation, pharmaceutical litigation, and trade secrets litigation. He successfully represents Fortune 500 clients and universities in patent jury trials and Markman hearings. He has litigated cases in a variety of technology areas, including molecular biology, polymer chemistry and retroreflective optics.

Adkisson received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1996, where he was on the staff of the Wisconsin Law Review, and his B.A., cum laude, from the University of Nebraska in 1993.
