World-Class Women's Sevens Rugby Coming to Canada

Rugby Canada receives support from the Government of Canada to host the 2015 IRB Women's Sevens World Series

GATINEAU, QUÉBEC--(Marketwired - April 22, 2015) - Department of Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced $225,000 in funding to Rugby Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program to support the hosting of the 2015 IRB Women's Sevens World Series in Langford, British Columbia, which took place on April 18 and 19.

Quick Facts

  • The 2015 IRB Women's Sevens World Series was held at the Westhills Stadium in Langford, with teams from New Zealand, Australia, France and the USA, in addition to the host Canadians.
  • Canada is one of the first nations to host a stop of the newly formed IRB Women's Sevens World Series. This Canada Sevens event was an important step in the continued development of women's rugby, especially as it prepares for its entry into the sport program for the first time at the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
  • During the Year of Sport in Canada, we are celebrating our athletes and their role in inspiring all Canadians, especially our young people, as they compete at home in major international events throughout this year. These include the 2015 IRB Women's Sevens World Series, the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 and the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.
  • When we embrace the power of sport and lead more active lifestyles, we not only benefit as individuals but we also build healthier, stronger communities. That is why the Government of Canada has doubled the Children's Fitness Tax Credit to $1,000 to help offset the costs of parents enrolling their children in organized sports.

Quotes

"During this Year of Sport in Canada, we are very proud to assist Rugby Canada in hosting the 2015 IRB Women's Sevens World Series for the first time in our country. This event was an amazing opportunity for our rugby athletes to showcase their talent and fine-tune their preparations against a world-class field as they look ahead to this summer's Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games and on to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Go Canada Go!"

-The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport)

"Without Sport Canada's financial support, we wouldn't have been able to win the bid to host Canada Sevens tournaments in Langford and Vancouver. The success our teams had at the Sevens World Cup and on the men's and women's World Rugby Sevens Series is a direct result of the funding we have received from Sport Canada."

-Graham Brown, CEO of Rugby Canada
