Organizational Psychologist Reveals Six High Potential Leadership 'Accelerators'

TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - May 12, 2015) - Organizational Psychologist Dr. Katherine Alexander has identified the six pivotal experiences that emerging leaders require to accelerate their development. In a report released today, she explains that these emerging leaders, often called High Potential talent (or 'HiPo's') have the character, motivation, performance track record, knowledge, and learning orientation necessary to succeed in roles with significantly greater scope. Contrary to most experts in the area who recommend coaching and mentorship programs for HiPo's, Dr. Alexander emphasizes the importance of pivotal experiences -- the defining moments or opportunities that challenge people to think and act differently. To accelerate their growth, she has identified the six such experiences they must have. They are:

  1. Visibility - the emerging leader needs to be well-known throughout the company.
  2. Insight - there must be opportunities for self-reflection and insight.
  3. Peer Exchange - opportunities to interact with, share, commiserate, and plan with other HiPos.
  4. Opportunities to Add Strategic Value - opportunities to work on mission-critical work.
  5. Focused Learning - get the technical knowledge they need, particularly in finance.
  6. Experimentation - opportunities to experiment and even potentially fail.

Dr. Alexander reports an increase in the number of companies specifically focused on investing in their HiPo's. "We are seeing a dramatic upswing in our work in this area," she says, "as CEO's and HR leaders increasingly recognize the strategic importance that HiPo's have on future success." Alexander explains the trend in the report released today entitled, "High Potential Leadership: Emerging Trends in Assessment & Development," and earlier announced the launch of the website www.highpotential.ca.

Dr. Alexander received a Doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Bowling Green State University and is a Principal consultant at Kilberry Leadership Advisors where she leads the High Potential Services practice.
