The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, today extended her congratulations to the 2015 graduating class of fishery officers and welcomed them to the Conservation and Protection Branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The graduation ceremony was held in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The new fishery officers were required to complete 18 weeks of classroom training, including ten weeks of training on enforcement methods at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Training Academy in Regina, Saskatchewan. The graduates will now join Conservation and Protection field offices across Canada to complete 30 months of practical training.

Quick Facts

  • Fishery Officers are the federal government's first line in support of the Fisheries Act, and other related acts and regulations.
  • In addition to protecting fishery resources and fish habitat, fishery officers promote compliance and conservation, stewardship and sustainability of fisheries. Fishery officers work hard to build awareness about enforcement activities and conservation goals through public events and public education.

Quotes

"Fishery officers play a critical role in making Canada a global leader in fisheries conservation and protection. They work tirelessly to promote compliance and to protect Canada's fishery resources on the land, on the sea and in the air. I am continually impressed by the work these individuals do and I am very pleased to welcome these new graduates to the department."
