DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - May 22, 2015) - Paragon Software Systems, Inc., a leader in vehicle routing and scheduling optimization solutions, has been named a SDCE100 Award winner for 2015 for the second consecutive year from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine. These awards honor the best projects that navigate the constantly changing waters of today's complex supply chains. Paragon Software Systems was chosen for its project with Southeastern Food Merchandisers, where Paragon provided routing and scheduling optimization for fixed routes of 20 trucks delivering food service products and daily route management.

"The Paragon team is pleased to win this award once again from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine for our continued commitment to developing and implementing route optimization software solutions that deliver real savings to our growing client base," said William Salter, CEO and President of Paragon Software Systems, Inc. "In today's competitive environment we remain 100% committed to helping our clients streamline their distribution operations using our advanced software solutions which, when combined with the knowledge and experience of our support and implementation team, make us a powerful player in this growing market sector."

"Our readers count on Supply & Demand Chain Executive for intelligence and decision-making information on solutions and best practices for supply chain transformation," said Barry Hochfelder, editor of Supply & Demand Chain Executive. "With this year's Supply & Demand Chain Executive 100, we are featuring '100 Great Supply Chain Projects' that demonstrate the broad spectrum of opportunities for enabling excellence in the supply chain. The projects featured can serve as a roadmap for supply chain executives looking for new opportunities to drive improvement in their own operations."

Southeastern has been using Paragon Route Management System (RMS) software for over 6 years, but recently did a major redesign of two-thirds of all routes in March 2015. Transportation managers at Southeastern Foods use Paragon RMS software daily to fine-tune fixed routes for 20 trucks that deliver food service products. Once Southeastern creates their standard fixed routes in Paragon RMS, they then download the daily order files that contain delivery details from their own order management system. The route management software checks the original truck schedules automatically for feasibility and legality, adjusting them appropriately to avoid any potential problems and further improve efficiency.

Once Paragon builds a route plan for the orders, transportation managers review and save routes for that day. The route data is then automatically sent to drivers through the company's mobile computing platform to execute in sequence. Southeastern Foods also uses Paragon to compare the route plan with actual performance. Position data captured from its mobile system comes back to Paragon for post-mortem analysis. Managers can also see within Paragon how routes are progressing at any time during the day.

During the first week in March, icy rain and snow blanketed much of Southeastern Foods Merchandisers' network, forcing the distributor to postpone deliveries of food-service products to some customers. Its restaurant customers in Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and Northern Florida continued to send in new orders, creating a weather-imposed backlog. The company turned to its routing software system from Paragon Systems to re-route deliveries and keep them supplied.

"The software factored in historical order volumes for the week to show managers how the rest of the week would pan out. I couldn't imagine doing it without Paragon," said Jason Chestnut, Director of Operations at Southeastern Food Merchandisers.

Benefits reported using Paragon include:

  • 15% cost saving from reducing fuel, mileage and labor
  • Ability to model 'what if' scenarios and prepare for possible problems
  • Seamlessly integrated with order management system
  • Improved post-mortem transportation analysis using planned and real data
  • Quickly re-routed deliveries to maintain service and clear weather-imposed backlog
