SAINT-JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwired - May 25, 2015) - As the New Brunswick government moves forward with plans to privatize health care services, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1199 members at St-Joseph's Hospital are taking action.

"We are holding a candlelight vigil to mourn the death of Public Health Care in our hospitals, says CUPE 1199 President Lisa Allen. "The decision to privatize environment, dietary and porter services in our hospitals may seem like it will result in cost savings on the surface, but we all know that privatization means higher costs with reduced service."

CUPE 1199, who represents over 290 members at St. Joseph's hospital, is inviting supporters to join them in telling Health Minister Boudreau to keep health care public.

CUPE represents the largest number of employees in the health care system - 190,000 - including auxiliary nurses, support staff and paramedics.
