Acrow Bridge Salutes New Jersey Institute of Technology's Top 10 Performance at the 2015 National Student Steel Bridge Competition

Sixth Place Finish Overall Is the Best in NJIT's 20 Years of Competition

PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwired - Jun 1, 2015) - Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, would like to extend its congratulations to the talented team of civil engineering students from the New Jersey Institute of Technology on their success at the 2015 National Student Steel Bridge Competition held May 22-23 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. NJIT placed 6th overall in the highly spirited competition.

The annual event, sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Society of Civil Engineers, requires student teams to design, fabricate, and test a structure that meets client specifications and optimizes performance and economy. Acrow Bridge has been a longtime sponsor of the NJIT team along with Schiavone Construction and others.

This year's overall competition brought together 224 bridge-building teams from engineering schools across the U.S. and abroad, and 47 advanced to the national level. In addition to its overall ranking, the NJIT team also had competitive rankings in the categories of Lightness, Construction Economy and Structural Efficiency.

"This was a historic year for the NJIT team," said Tom Woloszyn, Acrow Project Manager and former two-year NJIT bridge team captain. "In jumping from a 12th place finish last year to 6th this year -- which is a tremendous achievement -- they bested large schools like Penn State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. I know they are already looking forward with great anticipation to next year's competition!"

Bill Killeen, President and CEO of Acrow Bridge and 1983 NJIT graduate, added, "We are thrilled with the results of this year's competition and the fine showing of the NJIT team. While the competition requires the students to challenge real-world issues with the application of engineering principles and theory, it also leaves room for creativity, imagination, and learning to be a collaborative team member -- all of which are critical tools for the successful engineer."
