MEDIA ADVISORY: Calgary's Largest Yarn-Bombing to Launch Affordable Housing!

Construction to begin in colourful style on future homes for 49 formerly homeless Calgarians!

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - June 8, 2015) - On Tuesday, June 9th, the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) and the RESOLVE Campaign will host a colourful kick-off event to mark the beginning of construction of the second and third of eight purpose-built apartments for formerly homeless Calgarians. Through the innovative capital campaign, RESOLVE, the 25-unit Aurora on the Park will be built in Hillhurst Sunnyside and the 24-unit Providence House at 426 and 428 2nd Avenue N.E. in Crescent Heights.

The event will showcase the 'yarnbombing' which artists from This is My City Art Society have woven together around the entire house. In addition, invited dignitaries, including Mayor Nenshi, will write the 'first wishes' for the future of Aurora on the Park, Providence House, the future tenants and the communities on fabric to be hung on the house.

WHO: The program for the kick-off event will include special guest speakers:
Emcee, Linda Olsen, Co-Anchor of Global News Hour at 6
Mayor of Calgary Naheed Nenshi
Greetings read on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Member of Parliament for Calgary Centre-North

WHAT: Invited guests will be celebrating the kickoff of construction for an affordable housing apartment building by 'writing wishes' on fabric to be hung on the edges of the existing house. This is My City Art Society, with support from a Soul of the City Neighbour Grant at The Calgary Foundation, has transformed the exterior of the existing house with textile in an art installation known as yarn-bombing. The house will be demolished in late June with segments of the art work transferred to the construction site fencing.
The formal event will be followed by a community event, where all Calgarians are invited to drop-by and view the art installation and write 'wishes' to be hung from the house. There will be free entertainment and refreshments, plus a chance to view renderings of the future buildings.
