Virginia Plastic Surgeon Outlines Male Breast Reduction for the Treatment of Gynecomastia

Enrique A. Silberblatt, MD, FACS of Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia Highlights Male Breast Reduction as an Effective Option for Men Seeking Gynecomastia Treatment

ROANOKE, VA--(Marketwired - Jun 23, 2015) - When they reach the age of puberty, many males begin to develop enlarged and/or excessive tissue in the breasts, states Dr. Enrique A. Silberblatt, a board certified plastic surgeon in Virginia. Medically referred to as gynecomastia, he continues, this condition can affect one or both sides of the chest, and it often resolves by itself for most individuals. However, for some men, gynecomastia never goes away on its own, and its symptoms may become a source of self-consciousness in certain social and/or private situations.

To help men who wish to get rid of gynecomastia, Dr. Silberblatt offers male breast reduction at Aesthetic Surgery of Virginia, his private practice. "Since the root cause of gynecomastia is an excess of glandular breast tissue, which is often accompanied by a buildup of fat tissue, male breast reduction generally involves both tissue excision and liposuction," writes the Virginia plastic surgeon in a recent blog post. To begin the operation, he explains that liposuction will generally be utilized to remove fat and reduce fullness on both sides of the chest. Then, a semicircular incision is typically made along the bottom of the areola, and breast tissue is excised until an optimal outcome is achieved.

Following the procedure, Dr. Silberblatt notes that drains will be placed using the liposuction incisions, and a special compression garment is to be worn over the chest to facilitate healing. On the second postoperative day, he says the drains can typically be removed, though sutures should remain in for about seven to ten days. Any strenuous work and/or exercise will generally need to be avoided for about three weeks, he adds, but jobs that require minimal physical activity can often be resumed after about five days.

Ultimately, Dr. Silberblatt states that an estimated 15% males in America have experienced gynecomastia, and it is a condition for which no one should be ashamed to seek treatment. In fact, he notes that male breast reduction employed for the treatment of gynecomastia has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates of any procedure offered at his practice.
