Deloitte's Josh Bersin Tells 'Firing Line with Bill Kutik' Corporate Engagement Problems Come From Overwhelmed Employees Needing More Simplicity on the Job

Leading Expert Says HR Is Part of the Problem but Can Offer Solutions

WESTPORT, CT--(Marketwired - Jun 23, 2015) -  Josh Bersin, principal, Bersin by Deloitte, Deloitte Consulting LLP, tells "Firing Line with Bill Kutik®" that HR's top problem of lack of engagement may be mitigated by simplifying jobs and job requirements to win back the "overwhelmed employee" and improve engagement.

Bersin's comment highlights the fifth edition of the new broadcast-quality video interview program starting its YouTube run today at http://bit.ly/KutikFiringLine.

"More than two-thirds of the companies we [Deloitte Consulting LLP] studied believe that one of their critical business issues is complexity and the overwhelming nature of work. The constant streams of information coming in on your phone, too many emails, too many conference calls, too many meetings..." Bersin tells Kutik.

He emphasizes that too much complexity on the job has caused many employees to become dis-engaged from their employers, a trend that suddenly moved to the top of HR leaders' concerns.

To enhance engagement, companies need to simplify, Bersin says, adding that HR and the systems it uses need to be part of the effort.

"I think one of the wakeup calls for us is that we're part of the problem," Bersin says. "At an automobile company over the summer, we were talking about the development of their technical professionals, and they told me they had just built a 62- level competency model for their...manufacturing engineers, and they asked me how do we assess people against 62 competencies, and I said, 'Well, I don't know. I'm not sure you can'."

"We tend to make things complicated. We tend to be craftsman that like the elegance of the solution and now we need to learn how to create simplicity and clarity in the solution."

The interview with Bersin, the nation's most popular HR expert, is the second in a two-part "Firing Line with Bill Kutik®" series. The new monthly web program features HD video interviews with thought-leaders from the HR community including practitioners, vendor executives, analysts and consultants.

"Our two-part series with Josh Bersin is the latest example of our commitment to bringing our audience the best thinking from the leading thinkers in the HR community, without any marketing slant or product promotion," Bill Kutik, host and managing editor of "Firing Line with Bill Kutik® said.
