PARRY SOUND, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - June 24, 2015) - On May 26, 2015, Kevin Morgan of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario (formerly of Parry Sound, ON), pleaded guilty to one count of permitting an animal to be in distress.

On December 1, 2013, an Ontario SPCA officer received information from the Ontario Provincial Police in regards to a "domestic situation" and alleged animal abuse and neglect. On December 2, 2013, Ontario SPCA officers arrived at the residence of Kevin Morgan and met with his former wife, who alleged he was just incarcerated, leaving 13 horses in her care. The investigators found the horses to be in poor body condition, without adequate water, hay or bedding available. A deceased horse fetus was found in one of the stalls with an emaciated mare.

Orders were issued under the Ontario SPCA Act to have four of the horses examined by a veterinarian and to follow treatment recommendations from that veterinarian. On December 4, 2013, the veterinarian found the body condition of the four horses ranging from 0.5 to 1/9. They needed hoof trimming, dental care, grooming and possible delousing. They also found a lack of water and feed in the stalls that were dirty and had no bedding. One of the horses was later found to have had an ingrown halter.

Six horses and four young cats were voluntarily surrendered to the Ontario SPCA and were adopted into new homes.

"There is no excuse to let an animal go without proper veterinary medical attention," says Alison Green, Regional Inspector. "If you are unable to care for your animal, contact your Ontario SPCA Community Society to discuss what options are available."

Kevin Morgan has been sentenced to two years probation with Court Orders to pay restitution in the amount of $5,000 to the Ontario SPCA within two years. His sentence also prohibits him from owning, having custody, care of, or living with any animal for the remainder of his life, along with allowing Ontario SPCA officers to monitor compliance, and to notify the Ontario SPCA and Ontario Court of Justice of any change of address.
