Language Champions Celebrated at First Nations Languages Conference


VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - July 17, 2015) - In a special recognition ceremony today, the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) recognized the achievements of four BC First Nations Language Champions at the First Nations Languages Conference in Vancouver.

The 2015 Language Champions are:

Jessica Williams, champion of the Gitsenimx language, Youth Award. This award honours an individual 18 to 30 years of age, who is learning their language and inspiring others.

Diane Brown, champion of the Haida language, Community Education Leadership Award. This award honours an individual who is exemplifying excellence in language teaching and leadership in a community setting.

Dolly Sylvester, champion of the Hul'q'umi'num' language, School Education Award. This award honours an individual who is exemplifying excellence in language teaching and leadership in a school setting.

Angela Dennis, champion of the Taltan Language, Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honours an individual who has significantly contributed to the preservation and teaching of a First Nations language over their lifetime.

The First Nations Languages Champions celebration is a highlight of the two-day FNESC First Nations Languages Conference, which draws over 200 First Nations language teachers and language learners together for networking and sharing.
