CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwired - July 20, 2015) - Operations are ongoing at Nexen Energy's Long Lake facility to contain and clean up the pipeline emulsion spill that occurred on July 15, 2015. Daily progress updates are now available on the company's website at www.nexencnoocltd.com.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT UPDATE:

Nexen sincerely regrets that this incident has occurred. We remain committed to minimizing the impact the spill has on the environment and wildlife. We are working closely with the Fish and Wildlife department of Alberta Environment and Parks to continue developing a comprehensive wildlife mitigation plan. The plan will be shared with the public after it has been approved by the Alberta Energy Regulator.

Unfortunately, on July 19 at 10:30 a.m. MST a deceased duck was discovered on the western side of the spill site. It is believed the duck had been at the spill site before many of the wildlife deterrents were put in place.

A number of protective measures and deterrents are now in place to help prevent wildlife from accessing the area affected by the release. This includes a variety of fences, wildlife cannons, effigies and bird flagging. There is also a considerable amount of human activity 24 hours a day associated with the containment and clean-up operations.

We will continue to work cooperatively with Fish and Wildlife and the Alberta Energy Regulator to minimize impacts to wildlife, including the implementation of additional wildlife deterrents as necessary.

MEDIA TOUR:

At 9:30 a.m. MST on Wednesday, July 22, Nexen Energy will host a guided media tour of the spill site south of the Long Lake facility.

Fang Zhi, CEO, and Ron Bailey, Senior Vice-President, Canadian Operations, will provide an update on the clean-up efforts and answer questions.

Media have the option to be transported from the Fort McMurray airport to the Long Lake site or they can go directly to the Long Lake facility security gate. If using the Nexen airport shuttle, please be there at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday to board. The Long Lake facility is located off highway 881, marker 222, 1 km southeast of Anzac, Alberta. Signage is visible along the highway and at the Long Lake turn off.

Please note that closed-toed, flat shoes are required. Steel toed boots are preferred, as it is an industrial environment. Other personal protective equipment will be provided.
