Seasoned Web-Scale Database Engineer to Drive Innovation and Continued Rapid Adoption of the Leading Open Source RDBMS Solution for the Cloud

SAN FRANCISCO, CA and HELSINKI, FINLAND--(Marketwired - Jul 21, 2015) - MariaDB® Corporation, a recognized leader in open source database solutions for high availability, scalability and performance, today announced the addition of Nishant Vyas as Chief Technology Officer. Nishant, an early employee of LinkedIn, is a veteran of database engineering for the web-scale enterprise. In his role as CTO, he is responsible for driving MariaDB's technology strategy as the next generation database platform built to meet the key functionality requirements of cloud and SaaS: reliability, scalability, security and interoperability.

"Nishant's leadership will be vital as we continue to develop MariaDB into the leading open source database platform," CEO Patrik Sallner said. "His broad, web-scale engineering experience with multiple database technologies, including MySQL, NoSQL and Oracle, give Nishant a keen understanding of our users' business-critical functionality requirements, in an increasingly cloud-driven world where MariaDB is experiencing increasing adoption by large enterprises."

Nishant joins the seasoned team of database all-stars at MariaDB, which collectively represents over 400 years of MySQL experience and includes Monty Widenius, co-creator of MySQL and CTO of the MariaDB Foundation. "Key to the strategic success of the company, my role as CTO is to engage with users and partners to understand their requirements and collaborate to build the right solution that addresses those urgent needs. My ambition is to evolve MariaDB's reputation for responsive innovation into one of a technology leader," commented Nishant. "No great technology can be built in a vacuum."

Prior to MariaDB, Nishant served at LinkedIn for almost nine years, most recently leading the Database Engineering and Operations team. As one of the first 100 engineers hired at LinkedIn, he helped to build, scale and support some of the largest and busiest databases on the web. During his tenure, his team built and scaled key data stores to successfully support the rapid growth of LinkedIn's membership from 6 million to more than 360 million. Earlier in his career, he worked at Wells Fargo with a team managing over 1200 databases. Nishant has a master's degree in Computer Science from University of Bridgeport and holds a patent on waterwheel sharding.
