Oscuro Cigars: A Savory Safari Into the Heart of Darkness

CigarAdvisor.com's List of the 10 the Best Cigars Rolled With Oscuro Wrappers and a Sampler, Too

EASTON, PA--(Marketwired - July 27, 2015) - -- "Don't be intimidated by that dark cigar! Chances are, you're gonna like it," writes CigarAdvisor.com executive editor, Gary Korb, in his article, "10 Oscuro Cigars You Should Be Smoking," which goes "live" on CigarAdvisor.com this Sunday, July 26. Korb takes cigar enthusiasts on a journey into the "heart of darkness" as he aims his spotlight at 10 of the best cigars rolled in oscuro wrappers that will also be offered in a specially-made cigar sampler labeled "That's Oscuro."

Meaning "blackish" or "dark" in Spanish, Korb points out that oscuro leaves are taken from the highest tier of the tobacco plants, which is called the "first priming." Korb also describes the process by which these wrapper leaves attain their oscuro classification.

"Some tobacco growers refer to these wrappers as medio tiempo, or 'half time,' because they've been left on the plant 50% longer. . .By doing this, the leaves actually being their curing process while still on the plant. The end result is a wrapper that's thicker, much darker, richer in flavor, and sweeter," writes Korb.

The article also points out that most oscuro wrapper leaves are fermented from heartier strains that include Connecticut broadleaf, Mexican San Andres Negro, Brazilian Mata Fina and Arapiraca, and Nicaraguan Habano. Additionally, the oscuro fermentation and aging process -- the period during which the leaves acquire their dark colors ranging from very dark brown to almost pitch black -- are described in brief detail.

As for the oscuro cigars that Korb recommends cigar smokers should try, they include Casa Magna Oscuro Robusto for its complexity and "dark tobacco flavors with an ample amount of sweetness, and an alluring aroma." Another entry is the classic Punch Rothschild Oscuro for its smoothness, balance and "richer taste profile imbued with earthy, woody and sweet-spicy flavors." Among the other cigars listed are the Rocky Patel Freedom Toro, My Father Le Bijou 1922 Toro, and the Partagas 1845 Extra Oscuro Robusto Gordo.

Those who already enjoy smoking extra-dark cigars, as well as newer cigar smokers who are still discovering the variety of premium handmades available to them, will find the information useful, while the "That's Oscuro" sampler will offer them a chance to taste all of these cigars firsthand. Referencing the sampler, Korb added, "It's really the best way for cigar lovers to try all of these oscuro smokes at a reasonable price." To read the entire article, [click here].
