New Frontier Report Commissioned by Drug Policy Alliance

Report will determine number of inmates incarcerated in CA for marijuana related violations

WASHINGTON, DC, July 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- New Frontier, the leading Big Data provider in the cannabis industry, has been commissioned by the Drug Policy Alliance to conduct an analyst report that will determine the number of inmates incarcerated in the state of California for marijuana related violations.

"California has no centralized repository in their penal system for tracking this kind of data. Every jurisdiction has its own way of classifying inmate information, which makes it extremely difficult to draw meaningful conclusions about marijuana incarceration rates," said Giadha DeCarcer, New Frontier CEO. "Our hope is that our data and analysis will bring greater transparency to the California penal system that will benefit the community."

"As marijuana reform continues to progress, more questions are emerging than answers. The need for data driven analysis has never been greater and we are excited about working with New Frontier to investigate some of the criminal justice issues that will be pertinent to marijuana legalization in California in 2016," said Amanda Reiman, DPA, Manager, Marijuana Law and Policy.

The study will be released early 2016 and explore the following issues:

  • The number of arrests and incarcerations for marijuana related offenses in the state
  • The length of sentences being served by inmates convicted only of marijuana-related offenses
  • The size of the prison population that would be impacted if marijuana is legalized in California in 2016
