Apiary Closes $6.8 Million Series A Funding to Deliver Next-Generation API Development Platform to Businesses Worldwide

Flybridge Leads Round With Participation From Baseline Ventures and Credo Ventures; Demand Continues to Skyrocket for In-House API Development

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 18, 2015) - Apiary, the company that makes application programming interface (API) development simple and collaborative, today announced that it has completed a $6.8 million Series A round of funding led by Flybridge with participation from Baseline Ventures and Credo Ventures. The company had previously raised $1.6 million, bringing the total to $8.4 million raised to date. The new funding comes on the heels of record global customer growth and will enable Apiary to continue to grow its team and develop new features that support the unique needs of enterprise API design. In tandem with the funding, the company also unveiled a new API testing service that enables developers to continuously verify local API code changes alongside production implementation, streamlining the API testing process.

Business use of APIs -- a set of protocols that specify how software applications can interact with one another -- is rapidly expanding; according to Gartner, an industry analyst firm, 50 percent of business-to-business collaboration will take place through web APIs by 2017, and by 2018, 75 percent of Fortune 1000 firms will offer public web APIs. The dramatic adoption of APIs is largely due to the challenges associated with traditional application integration strategies, which are designed for legacy client-server infrastructures but fail to meet today's need for real-time, distributed cloud and mobile applications.

"As software ecosystems continue to grow and converge, there is a huge opportunity for technologies that can help businesses easily and effectively create robust APIs. With the industry's most comprehensive and reliable API development platform, Apiary is leading the way for businesses around the world," David Aronoff, general partner at Flybridge. "We are excited to partner with the team as the company continues to innovate and grow in this increasingly vital space."

Up until 2013, when Apiary publicly launched the industry's first API development platform and the groundbreaking API Blueprint open-source project, developers struggled to design, test, and deploy APIs, leading to broken software integrations. Apiary addresses these challenges by creating a clear workflow and infrastructure for comprehensive API design. With Apiary, developers can design and test APIs as they are being developed, to ensure that they will work as expected when deployed alongside software.

"As APIs shift from being byproducts of the software development process to revenue-generating products in their own right, businesses are increasingly relying on APIs to drive growth. Apiary is helping businesses harness the power of APIs in today's interconnected, software-driven, multiplatform world," said Jakub Nesetril, CEO of Apiary. "Our sole mission is to provide developers with a platform to easily create unbelievably powerful APIs. The new capital will fund this mission through radical innovation and the accelerated delivery of cutting-edge tools to the world's largest footprint of API developers. We are thrilled to partner with our investors to revolutionize the way APIs are used in software development."

Apiary -- the most robust API platform -- enables businesses to:

  • Eliminate the most common cause of software failure -- Out-of-date API documentation dramatically increases the risk of API failure, but keeping it current is a manual, time-consuming process; Apiary automates the process and ensures reliability by enabling developers to continuously test an API against its documentation
  • Drastically reduce the time and cost of creating internal and external APIs -- The Apiary platform organizes API teams in a central collaborative space and streamlines the API development lifecycle: design, prototyping, testing, documentation, and more
  • Open new channels for business growth -- Creating solid information links between information technology platforms--on-premise, cloud, web, mobile, and internet-of-things (IoT) -- enables businesses to attract and engage new users and customers

"APIs are a critical component of business infrastructure, not only from a technological perspective but also for business development and sales growth. Our API-centric strategy relies on robust APIs that address our business customers' unique pain points," said Corey Scobie, VP of Open Platform, Akamai. "The Apiary platform enables us to streamline the process of creating reliable APIs right out of the gate, reducing the time and overhead required to deliver an API to our customers and virtually eliminating the risk of creating a broken or faulty API. With Apiary, we've scaled from ten to more than thirty APIs--while reducing the associated costs and accelerating overall business growth -- and plan to create more than 100 APIs within the next 18 months."
