Death of an Inmate at Edmonton Institution

On August 20, 2015, Ryan William Witvoet, an inmate at Edmonton Institution was found unresponsive in his cell.

Staff members immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called. The offender was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

At the time of his death, Mr. Witvoet, aged 31 years old, had been serving a sentence of 6 years, 4 months and 14 days, since September 24, 2012, for Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Careless Use of a Firearm, Unauthorized Possession of a of a Prohibited/Restricted Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon Obtained by Commission of an Offence, Fail To Comply with Conditions Under Recognizance, Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, Operate Motor Vehicle - Flight.

The inmate's next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the medical examiner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
