ADVISORY: OFL Campaign to Stop Harper Rolls Into Oshawa with a Mass Labour Canvass for NDP Candidate Mary Fowler

OSHAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 21, 2015) - Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) is rolling out a campaign to "Stop Harper" and the first stop is in the newly drafted riding of Oshawa. The OFL, in co-operation with the CLC and regional labour councils, has identified several key "battleground" ridings in Ontario where an NDP candidate has a strong chance at defeating a Conservative candidate and is calling on union members to donate their personal time to the NDP campaign.

"The campaign to Stop Harper is as grass roots as it comes," said OFL President Sid Ryan. "Workers across Ontario know that Harper is hell-bent on driving down wages, dismantling benefits, gutting public services and stripping workplace rights. That is why union members are volunteering their time to raise these concerns directly at the doorsteps in ridings where Tories are vulnerable."

WHO: OFL President Sid Ryan, joined by labour activists
WHAT: Media availability prior to Oshawa Labour Canvass
WHEN: Saturday August 22, 2015, starting at 10:00 a.m.
WHERE: Mary Fowler Campaign Office: 32 King Street East, Oshawa

"Oshawa voters have progressive values and they are ready for change," said Ryan. "Mary Fowler is a strong NDP candidate and a champion for public childcare, education and the environment. This riding is Ed Broadbent's old stomping ground and voters in this region recently elected Jennifer French as their Member of Provincial Parliament. The NDP unseated a 20 year Tory veteran in Oshawa and they will do it again."

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario. For information, visit www.OFL.ca and follow the OFL on Facebook and Twitter: @OFLabour.
