Canon Releases the 35mm f/1.4L II USM Prime Lens, Optimized for Full-Frame DSLRs

Photography News: This Fast L-Series Prime Features a New Lens Construction, New Coatings, and New Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - August 27, 2015) - B&H Photo is excited to share the announcement of the long-awaited Canon 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens, a redesigned version of the popular 35mm lens that Canon first released in 1998. This version is constructed of 14 elements in 11 groups, which include a newly-introduced Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element to help reduce chromatic aberration and color fringing. Furthering the improvement of image quality is the inclusion of two aspherical elements and one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element. Canon’s Subwavelength Coating reduces ghosting and lens flare, and fluorine coatings help to keep the front and rear elements clean by protecting against fingerprints and smudges. Additionally, as an L-series lens, it also features dust- and moisture-resistant construction.

Like its predecessor, this lens employs the Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast and quiet autofocus that can be overridden at any time, thanks to the large manual focus ring. A 9-blade diaphragm delivers smooth out-of-focus areas when paired with the fast f/1.4 maximum aperture for shallow-depth-of-field imaging. The 35mm f/1.4L II USM lens is optimized for full-frame sensors, but can also be used on APS-C-sensor cameras, where it will provide a 56mm-equivalent focal length.
