UPDATE: Animal Care Review Board Hearing in North Bay

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Aug. 27, 2015) - August 26, 2015, marked the third day for the Animal Care Review Board hearing in North Bay for the matter of the Ashworth case.

Due to the complexity of this case the hearing will be schedule to continue on October 5-9, 2015.

At this point the board has seen the photos and videos of the animals and the environment that they were living in. They have also heard from the attending veterinarian who performed the assessment of the animals on the property and of the environment in which they were living in.

It's important to note that the role of an Ontario SPCA Agent or Inspector is to respond to concerns of neglect, abuse or cruelty. We take an educational approach whenever possible. When necessary, orders are issued to owners, care givers or guardians of animals. Warrants are obtained under the Ontario SPCA Act when an owner doesn't comply with the orders, are unable to comply or choose not to comply. Veterinarians are brought in to provide their expert opinion and the removal of any animal from a property is done as a last resort and as a requirement for that animal's welfare. This is especially so in cases like this one with concerns over the sanitation, environment and medical condition of the animals.

Owners of animals have the opportunity to appeal the removal of an animal from their property, today is an example of that.

We commend citizens for taking on the responsibility to care for animals in need. This responsibility includes ensuring the animals are cared for as outlined under the Ontario SPCA Act Standards of Care.
