CUPE National President to attend Labour Day events in British Columbia

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Sept. 6, 2015) - The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is wishing workers across Canada and British Columbia a happy and restful Labour Day. Paul Moist, national president of CUPE, will be joining Mark Hancock, president of CUPE BC, in Metro Vancouver to celebrate Labour Day.

"Labour Day has always been a time to reflect on the progress we've made as working people, in making a better life for our families and in our communities," said Moist. "But this year we are particularly focused on the future, and the advancements possible for workers if we elect our first New Democratic federal government."

Moist and Hancock will be attending the Vancouver Labour Day picnic being hosted by the B.C. Federation of Labour, and the Vancouver and New Westminster District Labour Councils, 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Swangard Stadium, Burnaby B.C.

"Labour Day is always a great day for working people - one last break before families get back into the routines of school and work. But this year is particularly exciting, as we gear up for the final push to the federal election," said Mark Hancock. "After this weekend we will be only six weeks away from a federal NDP government that will put the interests of British Columbia's working people first."

CUPE is urging all workers across B.C. and Canada to take part in the many Labour Day parades, picnics and events, and join in the final push in the federal election campaign revived and refreshed.

"Workers across B.C. need to get the message out and talk about the issues important to us in this election campaign," said Hancock. "We need to speak with our family and neighbours about the need for affordable child care, and the importance of strengthening our public health care system."

"Across B.C. and Canada, workers need a federal government that will help build a sustainable economy with good paying jobs. With Thomas Mulcair and his NDP, that's what we'll get," added Moist. "With our help, we can get a government that will work for the interest of every day Canadians, such as expanding the Canada Pension Plan to ensure all Canadians can retire with dignity."
