The USAF has been the lead advocate in Department of Defense (DOD) initiates for laser coating removal (LCR) systems to reduce costs, reduce waste and increase weapons system readiness.  The program goals are to reduce exposure of harmful wastes in the workforce and environment while reducing depot maintenance time to improve aircraft availability.  James Arther, Principle Engineer with CTC stated, “The current methods utilized by depots for the removal of DOD coatings are costly, time consuming, and labor-intensive, cause substrate damage, and result in undesirable environmental conditions.”

Market demand is high in both the military and commercial sector for portable LCR systems including graffiti removal that continues to plague major urban and rural areas. Primary applications for LCR systems to remove coating or paint include substrate inspection, corrosion remediation and repair.
