Rodent and Insect Lead the List of Growing Health Complaints for NYC Restaurants

WESTWOOD, NJ--(Marketwired - Sep 28, 2015) - Complaints about New York City restaurants have increased 18 percent from 2014, jumping from 7,312 to 8,653. Topping the list of complaints have been rodents and insects, which were also the top complaints last year.

"Mice, rats, cockroaches, and other crawling insects enter in through small crack-openings in the foundation, doors, and structures," says Robert Suriano, President of UltraPro Pest Protection, "and most restaurants are too busy to spot these problems themselves." A quick inspection from a commercial pest control service could reveal numerous potential pest problems that most business owners have overlooked.

Contradictory to the number of complaints against New York restaurants, officials are insisting that restaurants are cleaner than ever.

A quote from Health Department spokesman Levi Fisher states, "Over the last five years, restaurant letter grading has successfully motivated restaurants to practice better food safety. Restaurants are performing better on inspection and are cleaner than they have ever been."

This year 58 percent of restaurants earned an A, the highest percentage since the city's new letter-grading systems was introduced six years ago. The number of violations have dropped from 213,000 to 196,000 between 2013 and 2015.

The conflicting reports do have a possible explanation. New York City has made an effort to make it easier to file complaints, so an increase is an expected result.

It will be interesting to see which trends continue when next year's reporting becomes available.
