ARA's Virtual Heroes Exhibiting at I/ITSEC 2015


ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Virtual Heroes Division of Applied Research Associates (ARA) will be showcasing exciting technologies at the 2015 Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) held November 30 – December 4 at the Orange County Convention Center.

  • Unreal Engine 4 Studio: a high-fidelity real-time editing/viewer tool available exclusively through Virtual Heroes. This toolset provides features such as real-time modification of effects; dynamic virtual object injects; reading/writing of terrain datasets; interactive definition of weather effects such as dust storms, rain, and snow; in-world annotation/markup for future reviews; and placeable, drivable vehicles with physics.
  • Combat Medic: a state-of-the-art training and simulation tool that uses a 3D, collaborative virtual world accessible from any internet-connected computer. Customizable learning modules address the top three injuries associated with preventable deaths on the modern battlefield: hemorrhage, airway management, and tension pneumothorax. Combat Medic was a finalist in the 2014 I/ITSEC Serious Games Showcase & Challenge.
  • LiveViewer: a 3D, high-fidelity display for Soldiers that uses Unreal 4 connected to the Common Training Instrumentation Architecture (CTIA). Live players report location, orientation, and posture to CTIA running in the cloud; LiveViewer receives the updates and displays the results in real time. Future capabilities will include displaying activities such as using a cell phone, digging, placing an IED, aiming a mortar, treating a patient, throwing an object, using binoculars, and aiming a weapon.
  • Cloud-based Nvidia GPU technology stack: this technology streams real-time full-HD interactive Unreal Engine training content to a $300 tablet or a $200 Chromebook.

In addition to the above technologies, we will be demonstrating two of Virtual Heroes' key enabling technologies for the Army:

  • PEO STRI/ARL's booth number 149:

Virtual Heroes, through its partnership with ARL-STTC, has developed technologies that will enable the next generation in training: the Synthetic Training Environment (STE). We've developed the Assimilation of Sources for a Cohesive ENvironment Description (ASCEND), which streamlines the source-to-Soldier synthetic environment (SE) data pipeline. ASCEND provides tools and standards that will enable Training at the Point of Need, Whole Earth Modeling, and distributed world-building services in the cloud. Our Layered Terrain Format (LTF) provides a standard for communicating environment information rapidly and efficiently, enabling a One-World Terrain capability.

  • PEO STRI's booth number 1433:

In support of the 2015 Squad Overmatch Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TC3) demonstration, Virtual Heroes developed a prototype Electronic Casualty Card (ECC). The ECC is an LTEC-based Android app that connects to existing MILES IWS Vests; it assesses injuries to individual combatants in force-on-force exercises based on the munition and hit location, replacing random injury assignment using MILES Casualty Cards. Additionally, the app displays the injury status based on TC3 doctrine and allows treatment using instrumented treatment devices. As shown through the 2015 Squad Overmatch TC3 demonstration, the ECC helps exercise skills and decision making associated with care under fire during live training.
