IEEE-ISTO Announces Formation of the Fairhair Alliance

New Member Program Facilitates Transition of Lighting and Building Automation Ecosystems Into the Internet of Things

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwired - Dec 9, 2015) - The IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO), an international federation of leading industry groups and consortia dedicated to the advancement of standardized technologies for the benefit of industry, today announces its newest member alliance program -- The Fairhair Alliance.

Comprised of leading Lighting, Building Automation and IT industry companies, the Fairhair Alliance aims to enable 'Internet of Things' (IoT) for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. Fairhair will drive the transition from stand-alone, proprietary systems to a common network infrastructure for professional building automation and lighting control systems.

"With the number of connected IoT devices increasing every year, adding building and lighting network systems to the mix is the next logical step," said Marco W. Migliaro, president and CEO, IEEE-ISTO. "Having successfully supported several lighting industry groups in the past, IEEE-ISTO is well positioned to support the Fairhair Alliance in its mission to enable the IoT for building automation and lighting controls."

By leveraging existing standards from IEEE and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF®), the Fairhair Alliance will develop solutions for common-based IP infrastructures. Specific protocols to be leveraged are BACnet™, KNX® and ZigBee®.

"IEEE-ISTO has the infrastructure in place to meet our immediate and long-term needs," said Ruud van Bokhorst, secretary-general, Fairhair Alliance. "Alliance members can focus on the work content from the beginning utilizing the resources and knowledge IEEE-ISTO has in place."
