Sauce Labs Helps Code.org Prepare for Its Annual Hour of Code -- One of the Largest Educational Technology Events in the World

Non-Profit Relies on Sauce Labs' Automated Testing Platform to Optimize the Experience for Young Coders

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Dec 9, 2015) -  Sauce Labs, Inc., provider of the world's largest cloud-based platform for automated testing of web and mobile applications, today announced that Code.org, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to and increasing diversity in computer science is using Sauce Labs to help ensure the software that powers its annual global Hour of Code event ships error-free and works on a broad away of browsers, operating systems and platforms. Billed as the "largest learning event in history," Hour of Code is a weeklong global movement reaching millions of students in more than 180 countries.

The grassroots campaign offers free coding lessons, tutorials and interactive games designed to demystify and teach coding basics to anyone ages four and up. Thus far, Code.org has reached more than 100 million students with the Hour of Code campaign and trained 16,000 teachers across the United States to establish full computer science courses in their schools. The organization is becoming a major force in a broader movement to encourage diversity in computer science, as 42 percent of its students represent young women, while 37 percent are Black or Hispanic.

In order to provide the best Hour of Code experience possible, Code.org is dedicated to rigorous software testing. The organization is leveraging Sauce Labs' automated testing platform to ensure the highest quality code releases in advance of the event, especially as Code.org prepares for a large amount of website traffic from a wide variety of user devices.

Using Sauce, Code.org is able to forgo a manual testing process to run hundreds of tests in parallel each day against multiple browser, OS and platform combinations. The development team has reduced testing time for each build by 78%, from 1-1/2 hours to less than 20 minutes, giving its developers more time to work on new features and ensuring higher-quality software. The result is that Code.org can focus on its signature event of bringing computer science education to the masses, and continue its efforts to increase diversity in the field.
