Statement by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister of Health on Establishing a Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying


OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 15, 2015) - Department of Justice Canada

The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, together with the Honourable Dr. Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, today issued the following statement:

"We are pleased that Parliament has agreed to establish an all-party Special Joint Committee on physician-assisted dying.

"The Committee will consult with experts, stakeholders and Canadians in general and make recommendations on the framework of a federal response on physician-assisted dying. The Committee will also review the report of the External Panel on Options for a Legislative Response to Carter v. Canada, which the Government was pleased to receive today.

"The Government of Canada thanks the panelists for their dedication to advancing a national dialogue on physician-assisted dying. We look forward to reviewing the report, which will be made available in the coming weeks."
