Minister Goodale Inaugurates the Correctional Service of Canada's New Training Academy


REGINA, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwired - Dec. 16, 2015) - Correctional Service Canada

The Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, joined Don Head, Commissioner of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) representatives to officially open CSC's new Training Academy at the RCMP Academy Depot Division in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The event included a ribbon cutting ceremony and a tour of the 3rd floor of the Academy featuring minimum-, medium- and maximum-security simulation areas. These areas allow CSC new recruits to learn through hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment, such as metal detectors, x-ray machines and electronic door systems.

The CSC Training Academy provides recruits with a comprehensive program that focuses on developing and evaluating the broad range of behavioural and technical competencies a CSC Correctional Officer needs. It also prepares the recruits to uphold CSC's standards, marked by professionalism and excellence.

  • CSC's new Training Academy spans two floors and includes minimum-, medium- and maximum-security simulation areas featuring cells, principal entrances and an inmate yard, as well as, classrooms, offices and a physical training area for staff.
  • CSC signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding with the RCMP to move into a new Training Academy within the Depot that can host up to 96 new CSC recruits and 20 staff.
  • CSC and the RCMP were recently awarded with the 2015 Real Property Institute of Canada Partnership Award for the work carried out at CSC's new Training Academy.
