Instead, Pullo counters that the same line of thinking can't be applied to gourmet items and other connoisseur commodities, cigars included. "The underlying questions," he says, "is really: 'what is a person willing to pay for the experience -- not just the cigar?"
John notes that the price of a premium cigar is most often affected by the costs introduced during the product life cycle, influenced by a combination of time, labor, tobaccos, cigar box production, taxes, duties and services that go into making and delivering a cigar to the market. "That's not a small figure," he says. Which is why, he believes, the 12 cigars highlighted in his Nicaraguan value cigar buying guide are rare finds. "I looked at their price tag, their relationship to a prominent cigar brand, the quality of the raw materials used, and the representation of Nicaraguan taste. There are also some intangibles that speak to value and quality, like the cigar's appeal to someone who would enjoy a Nicaraguan cigar, the pleasure derived from smoking it and the overall experience." And as he stated at the beginning of his report, Pullo says value doesn't have to mean "bargain price" -- though it doesn't hurt. "if you do your homework you can have any cigar on this list for well under $5 dollars, with most under 4 -- keep in mind, we're in a hobby where some of the most premiere examples can cost upwards of $30 a stick."
