Ontario SPCA Works With DOLA Legislation to Find Adoptable Pit Bull a New Home

The Ontario SPCA is pleased to report that another adoptable Pit Bull has been given a second chance through the Ontario SPCA dog transfer program.

In December 2015, a man quickly dropped off a Pit Bull-type dog at the Ontario SPCA Provincial Education and Animal Centre without providing any information on the animal or providing any contact information. The dog appeared underweight and required medical treatment for a skin condition.

Under the Dog Owners Liability Act, Pit Bulls are illegal in the province of Ontario, with the exception of restricted Pit Bulls. The Ontario SPCA always works within the legislation to provide the best possible care for animals entrusted to us. We are pleased to report that after several months of rehabilitation, including regular exercise, medical treatment and training, the dog, now named "Kenna," made a full recovery and is eligible for adoption. The Society reached out to a reputable shelter outside the province of Ontario and on February 12, 2016, Kenna was transferred to Quebec with the hopes of quickly finding her forever home.

"Every dog involved in a DOLA case is assessed individually and a plan is developed to meet the specific needs of that animal," says, Alison Green, Senior Inspector, Ontario SPCA. "When we are working with an adoptable Pit Bull-type dog, we will look for alternative options for the animal, including transferring them out of the province where they aren't illegal to own."
