UFCW Local 175 Welcomes Federal Anti-Scab Legislation

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb. 26, 2016) - Local 175 of the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) applauds the federal NDP anti-scab legislation tabled this week.

"This is a clear opportunity for the Trudeau government to prove that they have the best interests of working people in mind," said Shawn Haggerty, President of UFCW Local 175. "Canada must bring balance back to our Labour Laws, protect workers, and lead the way in progressive legislation."

Most collective agreements are settled without need for a strike or lockout. Allowing scab replacement workers often results in prolonged labour disputes, and it undermines working families who are fighting for what they feel is fair.

"Ontario workers need the provincial government to recognize that this type of legislation is needed here too," added Haggerty. "The workers on picket lines are our family, friends, and neighbours - and they deserve better protection from our labour laws."

UFCW Locals 175 & 633 represents more than 70,000 Union members working across Ontario.
