MongoDB Hosting Provider MongoLab Becomes mLab

New Name Marks Expansion Into Cloud Infrastructure Stack

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Feb 29, 2016) - MongoLab, the fully managed cloud database service featuring automated provisioning, scaling, and management of MongoDB databases, today announced it is becoming mLab. The change comes as the five-year-old company significantly expands its cloud infrastructure products throughout 2016. As with its original MongoDB-as-a-Service offering, the goal of mLab's upcoming product releases will be to simplify server-side development and enable programmers to more easily build software applications.

mLab's flagship product, its cloud database-as-a-service platform, hosts over 250,000 MongoDB deployments across AWS, Azure, and Google. Powering companies like Turner, Lyft, and Whole Foods Market, the platform has seen a 100% increase in paying customers in the last year and four consecutive quarters of profitability. mLab's fully managed cloud database solution will continue to be the place to run MongoDB in the cloud, enabling developers to focus on their products instead of on infrastructure operations.

While mLab's DBaaS has focused on the bottom of the stack, upcoming releases will concentrate on mLab's broader goal. The new products, which will begin releasing in mid-2016, will include significant enhancements to its cloud infrastructure capabilities as well as new open source tools that complement its existing database service.

"Our popular MongoLab database service has been the first achievement toward a larger mission," said Will Shulman, CEO, mLab. "When we initially approached investors, we envisioned a cloud-based laboratory where developers could build and deploy the entire server side of their application with a completely software-defined interface. Our premise was that a cloud-based server-side application stack built around JSON, microservices, document databases (like MongoDB), and software-defined networking could radically simplify server-side development."

"We're eager to see what mLab is cooking up as it adds new capabilities further up the stack," said Paul Nues, System Architect, about.me. "mLab's behind-the-scenes automation has allowed us to efficiently create, scale, and manage many MongoDB deployments. Their MongoDB tools and expertise help ensure we're getting the best performance from our databases. Expanding what they offer is a natural extension of their understanding for what's needed among server-side developers, and we look forward to trying out the new releases."
