Education Expert Eric Jensen Challenges Teachers to Better Support Underprivileged Students

BLOOMINGTON, IN--(Marketwired - March 04, 2016) - Solution Tree, a premier educational publisher and professional development provider, has announced the release of Poor Students, Rich Teaching: Mindsets for Change, by Eric Jensen. This new title examines the urgency of poverty in the United States and how it affects children in classrooms across the nation.

In Poor Students, Rich Teaching, Jensen details the necessary but difficult work K-12 teachers must do to establish the foundational changes essential to positively impacting students from poverty. "In teaching, you have to believe that every single student-100 percent of your students with no exceptions-can improve a great deal and that you're willing and able to make it happen," said Jensen. "You have to believe that you are the biggest difference maker in each student's life."

Outside of the school environment, children living in poverty often aren't challenged intellectually and have little or no access to learning resources such as books and computers, making the time they spend in the classroom vital to their long-term success.

According to the RAND Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, an effective teacher has two to three times the impact of other school-based interventions, including services, facilities, materials, and leadership. Yet in high-poverty areas, high rates of teacher turnover is the norm, and teachers often give up on struggling students too quickly. "Getting teachers to become more effective is only one solution-of many-to the poverty challenge. But it's a strong one," said Jensen.

The title includes practical and research-based strategies to ensure all students, regardless of circumstance, are college and career ready. Organized tools and resources are provided to help teachers effectively implement essential changes in their classrooms.

"Eric Jensen has provided a brilliant road map and a set of practical tools for any educator who truly desires to help the underprivileged student rise above his or her circumstances," said Anthony Muhammad, an educational consultant and author. "This is a must read for educators who serve students of poverty."

Jacque Wyant, principal of Marshalltown High School in Iowa, added, "Eric Jensen speaks from his perspective as a classroom teacher and does an excellent job providing many examples in implementing the strategies. There is an opportunity for building leaders to utilize this material to provide professional development on changing classroom culture and, in effect, changing school culture."
