Elias Custom Metal announced today the first ever Electrical House manufactured in Ontario and a $2 million investment that will help grow the economy and strengthen advanced manufacturing.

The utility grade Electrical House (or E-House) was built for Enersource Mississauga, and custom-designed and engineered in partnership with ABB Canada using 50 % recycled materials. E-Houses are a newer trend in the energy, mining, gas and oil sectors. The pre-fabricated structures are key components of the energy chain. They help create distribution efficiency and enhance safety.

ECM is also making a $2 million investment into new state-of-the-art technologically advanced laser equipment that will bring additional manufacturing capabilities, stimulate the economy and create around 10 new highly skilled jobs in the community.

Elias Custom Metal Fabrication Ltd. (ECM) is a leading advanced manufacturing company that is committed to using innovative technology and design to build custom precision metal fabrication in Canada and internationally.

"We are pleased to deliver this sophisticated e-house to our local partners. This E-House innovation, in addition to our $2 million investment in state-of-the-art equipment, will allow us to enhance our best-in-class advanced manufacturing to clients all across North America."

"Previously, Canadian companies often had to purchase E-Houses from abroad. Now ECM has brought the capacity and skilled knowledge home to be manufactured here in Ontario."

Fadi Emeid, President and CEO of Elias Custom Metal.

"Investing in innovation is key in a world where change is a constant. Companies who recognize the importance of advancing an agenda driven by competitiveness and productivity will be well prepared to face the challenges and seize the opportunities of the market. Ultimately, investments create jobs. As a City we appreciate leading edge companies that are willing to risk their capital to grow and make a contribution to our standard of living and quality of life."

Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua, City of Vaughan

"We are honoured to be a valued technology advisor and supplier of critical electrical equipment that enhances our customers' operations. Our local service and technology supply is a result of more than 60 years of global research, development and innovation into the best design and performance available to our customers in Canada."

Steve Chomyc, General Manager at ABB in Brampton.

"Enersource is pleased to be a part of this important milestone for our community, which provides an economic and industrial capacity boost for manufacturing in Ontario."

Chris Hudson, Vice President, Asset Operations at Enersource.

  • Electrical houses (or E-Houses) are designed to protect critical and valuable electrical equipment and are widely used in the oil and gas industry, power plants and renewable energy (wind farms)

  • Here are a few innovative features of this "intelligent design" E-House:

    • FIRST EVER: It's the first E-House to be custom-engineered and manufactured locally in Ontario

      • It weighs over 60,000 lbs and occupies 1,100 square feet

      • Its mere size and structure is impressive. It is 56 feet long, 13 feet high and 17 feet wide

      • This is the largest allowable size under Canada transportation rules and regulations. It is built to maximum dimensions and capacity limits for oversize loads.

      • It comes as a single welded unit which requires complex and very accurate calibration and trade expertise. By comparison, other E-Houses are usually modular and require assembly on-site.

      • The single welded unit makes it ideal for power plant upgrades as it can be built and tested off-site to minimize risks in the field.

    • MOBILE: Can be easily relocated to be used as a mobile substation

    • STRENGTH AND INTEGRITY: it is built with leak proof construction and indestructible roof integrity that can withstand transport

    • RECYCLED MATERIAL: the enclosure is made with approximately 50% recycled material equivalent to 30,000 lbs

    • TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED: the E-House has double wall insulation, built-in heating and air conditioning

    • SHEER SIZE AND WEIGHT: the finished unit will weigh 130,000 lbs once fully equipped by ABB and shipped to Enersource.

  • The $2 million investment will go toward new top-of-the-line Trumpf machines and to training for new employees. New capacity includes laser tube construction and automated welding for more complex projects.

ABB Canada

The ABB Electrification Products Division is a global leader in the supply of E-Houses, electrical switchgear and products which provide reliable power "intelligently" to the residential, commercial, and industrial markets. The reliability and intelligence factor are provided through the use of ABB's electrical switchgear which is a key component of the E-House.
