Wistron Selects AppliedMicro X-Gene® for New X5 Server Series OCP Compliant Chassis Design

AppliedMicro’s X-Gene 1 64-bit ARM®v8-based Server-on-a-Chip® Enables New Levels of Performance and Power Efficiency on OCP Compliant X5 Server Chassis Platform

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 09, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (Nasdaq:AMCC), a global leader in computing and connectivity solutions, today announced that Wistron Corporation, a leading ODM company supplying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products, services and systems to global customers, has selected AppliedMicro’s X-Gene® 1 server CPU for its X5 multi-services 5U chassis platform design.

The jointly-engineered X5 Server platform, featuring X-Gene’s 64-bit ARMv8-A microarchitecture, couples the performance and power-efficiency of X-Gene 1, and is designed as a multi-services server platform solution.  The fully-redundant 5U chassis platform is OCP compliant and offers several configuration options to support both compute and storage intensive applications. The X5 is a rack-mountable server system with a 10GE backplane that can support up to five compute node trays, each with four X-Gene CPUs, for a total of 20 compute nodes per chassis. The platform can also support five storage trays with one X-Gene CPU and either ten 3.5” hard disk drive (HDD) bays or 16 2.5” HDD bays per tray, enabling either 50 or 80 HDDs in a single chassis platform configuration.

This flexible design is easy to configure and deploy and is unique in that it can support multi-service customer requirements to deploy a combination of compute node and storage tray blades in the single chassis platform. The new platform will be on display at the OCP U.S. Summit taking place March 9-10 at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, California. Attendees can view a live demonstration in the AppliedMicro booth No. C11.

“Our collaboration with Wistron is another proof point of the growing demand for our X-Gene-based platform solutions.  We are excited to introduce the first ARMv8-A 64-bit multi-services platform design that can support both compute nodes and high density storage in the same chassis,” said Kumar Sankaran, associate vice president, software and platform engineering at AppliedMicro. “It also demonstrates the accelerating adoption of OCP-based platforms by server customers.  The X5 Server is a truly unique design and the first of its kind in the market.”

“We have enjoyed a great collaboration with AppliedMicro that truly shows our joint commitment to delivering powerful X-Gene-based solutions that are OCP compliant and meet the needs of server customers that want a unified platform design to support both compute and storage nodes in a single enclosure,” said Paul Sun,  Chief of Product Development, Enterprise B.G. at Wistron. “It’s a pleasure to demo the X5 Server platform at this year’s OCP U.S Summit as our technology is now ready for evaluation.”
