Acrow Bridge Provides Support Truss System for Use During Construction of Northwest Express Toll Lanes on Interstates in Metro Atlanta

Public-Private Project Is Largest in Georgia Department of Transportation History

PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwired - Apr 4, 2016) - Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, today announced it has completed the installation of a support truss system being used during the Northwest Corridor project in metro Atlanta. The project, which involves construction of toll lanes along 30 miles of interstates 75 and 575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties, is the largest to date for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and will bring new capacity and more mobility choices for motorists. It is expected to open to traffic in 2018.

The Acrow system, which is in use at the junction of Interstate 285 and Interstate 75 on the northwest side of Atlanta, includes two 70' tall towers and an 85' long truss span to support four long curved steel girders during their assembly. Ultimately, these girders will be part of the "flyover" of I-285 over I-75. The structure was rented from Acrow for the project and required fabrication of additional parts in addition to standard modular components. Installed late last month, it is expected to be in place for approximately four months.

"Access to the site was quite limited for both the placement of the towers supporting the truss span as well the two-crane pick required for the span installation," said Will Smith, Southeast Regional Manager at Acrow Bridge. "Additionally, because these roadways are extremely busy, special nighttime closures had to be coordinated with GDOT for installation of the Acrow system and the installation of the girders being supported by the support span." Bill Killeen, President and CEO of Acrow Bridge, added, "This project is a great example of how Acrow truss systems can provide critical support for structures potentially at risk of collapse. They are a great choice for state DOTs and contractors who need to stay on or ahead of schedule."

Northwest Express Roadbuilders is a joint venture of Archer Western Contractors of Atlanta, Hubbard Construction Company of Winter Park, Florida, and Parsons Transportation Group, headquartered in Pasadena, California. The project owner is GDOT.
