Government Funding Supports Important Sewer System Improvements in Grand Bay-Westfield

GRAND BAY-WESTFIELD, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwired - April 4, 2016) - Karen Ludwig, Member of Parliament for New Brunswick Southwest, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Ed Doherty, Minister Responsible for Service New Brunswick, today announced $791,374 in joint funding for wastewater infrastructure upgrades in Grand Bay-Westfield. Grace Losier, Mayor of Grand Bay-Westfield, also participated in the announcement.

The project involves improving five sanitary lift stations. Work includes replacing a lift station with a gravity sewer, installing new control panels, building a wet well, adding flow-monitoring equipment for lift station overflows, and creating a back-up power supply. This work will help ensure consistent service for residents and reduce wastewater overflows and the risk of sewer-related basement back-ups.

The governments of Canada and New Brunswick are each contributing up to $395,687 to this project through the Small Communities Fund, representing two-thirds of the estimated $1,187,061 total project cost.

The $1-billion Small Communities Fund supports priority public infrastructure projects in communities across the country with less than 100,000 residents. The project announced today is among 43 others approved so far in New Brunswick for more than $59 million in joint funding under the program. These represent important investments in the green energy, drinking water, disaster mitigation and wastewater infrastructure needed to build stronger, more sustainable communities.
