Consumer Confusion on Carbs Contributing to Obesity Surge, Phase 2 Survey Shows

KEARNY, NJ--(Marketwired - Apr 8, 2016) - A study of consumers' understanding of starchy foods, conducted by Customer Experience Partners for Pharmachem Laboratories -- the makers of Phase 2 Carb Controller -- found that 30 percent of the time Americans were unable to identify which foods contain the most starch, which may be the key to why they gain weight.

The national survey of 1,200 Americans indicates that the surge in obesity might have more to do with their misunderstanding of a starchy food and less to do with a "love affair" of carbs. When asked what's most likely to cause weight gain, 72.3 percent said sugars, 68.5 percent said fats, 56.8 percent said starches, while 8.5 percent said proteins, and 6.9 percent said fiber.

"In general, people eat too many starchy foods that they don't realize quickly convert to sugar once in the body. This is the main factor contributing to weight gain that most people do not understand," said James B. LaValle, clinical pharmacist, board certified clinical nutritionist and author of more than 20 books including, "Cracking the Metabolic Code." LaValle uses nutritional supplements containing the carb-controlling, clinically studied white kidney bean extract, called Phase 2 (known as: Phaseolus vulgaris), in his practice with patients who are struggling with weight loss, type 2 diabetes management and other health problems related to metabolic syndrome. "Many people also have a huge misconception on what a serving size really looks like; it's much smaller than most realize. Americans typically eat double or triple the amount of starches they think they are consuming."

When asked about the composition of a typical meal, survey respondents reported that nearly 23 percent of their typical meal was composed of starch, with protein making up 25 percent, fats at 20 percent, fiber at 17 percent and sugar at 15.5 percent. However, when asked to identify which foods were starchier, 30 percent were unable to identify the correct answer, and researchers of the study concluded that starch knowledge among consumers needs vast improvement.

"When most Americans think of a starchy food, what comes to mind is potatoes, french fries, bagels, chips, pasta, rice and rolls," said LaValle. "What they don't realize is other comfort foods that they are eating like fast foods and pre-packaged foods also can contain a lot of starch and lead to weight gain. We tend to gravitate to these foods because they are cheaper, convenient and provide us a false sense of comfort."

The survey concluded that nearly 90 percent of Americans choose weight-loss aids over mineral supplements or vitamins to try to lose weight. More than 75 percent indicated that they would be interested in trying a starch-blocking supplement.

"One of the reasons why we developed Phase 2 Carb Controller was to help people who are trying to eat right reduce the worry of eating too many starches, especially starches they many not recognize," said Mitch Skop, senior director of new product development for Pharmachem Laboratories. "Studies have proven that taking Phase 2 before a starchy meal can block up to 65 percent of unwanted carbohydrates. We believe Phase 2 can help a lot of people who are trying to manage their weight and lose weight safely."

Phase 2 Carb Controller is an all-natural, non-stimulant proprietary ingredient, with no known side effects that can be found in many carbohydrate blocking nutritional supplements such as Natrol's Carb Intercept, Now Foods' Phase 2 Starch Neutralizer, Swanson's Phase 2 Starch Neutralizer, GNC's Total Lean Phase 2 Carb Controller and The Vitamin Shoppe's Phase 2 Carb Controller.
