MathCrunch Rebrands as Yup, Adds $4M in Funding to Offer New Services

Stanford University's StartX Fund and Existing Investors Back Yup to Expand Its Tutoring Services to Include Physics and Chemistry

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - Apr 14, 2016) - MathCrunch, a mobile app that provides on-demand tutoring for students, today announced its rebrand to Yup, and that it has expanded its services to support Chemistry and Physics. Yup raised $4M in seed funding from existing and new investors, including Stanford University's StartX Fund and SOMA Capital. The new funding brings Yup's total funding to $7.5M.

Yup will use the funding to grow its user base and further develop its Personalized Inquiry Learning™ framework to combat the growing cheating problem among online tutoring services. Yup's platform monitors how tutors interact with students to ensure they are working through the problems and not just being handed the answers.

"We're passionate about changing the way students learn online and the existing tutoring model is broken. Online tutoring is a warped market that's become more about cheating than learning," said Naguib Sawiris, Founder, Yup. "When we launched MathCrunch we noticed users were misusing the platform. That's why we've developed the first mobile-based learning model that delivers personalized learning while taking steps to address the industry's cheating problem."

Yup wants to keep tutors accountable to improving student success. Through a personalized learning experience, which helps students identify and overcome their individual learning gaps, Yup tutors have increased their average length of engagement with students from 7 to 28 minutes per session. Every two weeks tutors are given in-depth feedback on each student's engagement from tutor managers and through other proprietary data.

Yup has over 300K student signups and will continue to deliver a personalized one-on-one tutoring service through their preferred method of communication: their mobile device. It will allow students to instantly be connected to an expert in mathematics, physics or chemistry, 24-hours a day. Yup is adjusting its pricing model to make it even more affordable by adding a 30-Minute plan for $6.99 a month, and $49.99 for unlimited access.
