Quad Cities Orthopaedic Surgeon Presents Minimally Invasive Thumb Arthritis Treatment

Dr. Tyson Cobb of Orthopaedic Specialists, PC Presented His Primary Research on Innovative Minimally Invasive Treatment of Thumb Arthritis at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting

DAVENPORT, IA--(Marketwired - May 3, 2016) - Dr. Tyson Cobb, an orthopaedic hand surgeon in the Quad Cities area, was chosen by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) to share his analysis into thumb arthritis treatment at their annual meeting in Orlando, Florida. He says this conference, held from March 1-5, hosted over 25,000 orthopaedic surgeons from over 30 countries. The goal of the meeting, Dr. Cobb explains, is to provide surgeons with the opportunity to hear the latest scientific and clinical knowledge from across all specialty areas of orthopaedic surgery, discover new solutions at the world's largest display of orthopaedic technology and services, and share experiences with colleagues.

Dr. Cobb has been internationally recognized for his development of a new technique for treating thumb arthritis that he says results in faster recovery, better range of motion, and better pinch strength than the older, more traditional open surgical methods. Dr. Cobb's method is a modification of the original arthroscopic technique. His long-term results have shown excellent pain relief, patient satisfaction, and return of pinch strength in most patients. His published series are the largest in the world literature.

"The new minimally invasive technique," says Dr. Cobb, "also allows for less soft tissue dissection, which results in less postoperative scarring, pain, and swelling. My patients are able to return to work, sports, and other leisure activities faster, which is really important to them."

Dr. Cobb believes that rapid return to activity is promoted through a combination of patient education and motivation, minimally invasive surgery with minimal tissue disruption, and effective pain management. Dr. Cobb treats many "out of town" patients who travel to have this minimally invasive procedure. Dr. Cobb reviews their x-rays and discusses treatment options on the phone prior to any travel. Once the surgery is scheduled, most patients see Dr. Cobb in the morning, have surgery in the afternoon, stay in a nearby hotel, see Dr. Cobb the next morning, and then return home.

When performing his new treatment for thumb arthritis, Dr. Cobb says he employs a new state-of-the-art anesthesia technique. This new anesthesia technique, he says, allows patients to go home after surgery, sleep in their own bed, and usually remain pain-free for around 18 to 36 hours after surgery. Furthermore, Dr. Cobb indicates that these new anesthesia techniques developed by Dr. Don Lalonde can provide several benefits, including substantial cost savings and enhanced post-operative pain reduction when compared to the traditional anesthesia services.
