NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - May 03, 2016) -  B&H Photo would like to share the announcement of the Leica M-D (Typ 262) Digital Rangefinder Camera, a screenless M-mount camera that pares down to the bare essentials to provide a pure photography experience. By removing the rear LCD, the M-D is said to bring back the anticipation and planning of film photography, as well as remove any complications brought by menu systems. Also, it eliminates live view and video capture potential, resulting in a camera designed solely for still photography.

A clean and classic rangefinder design from Leica, the M-D features intuitive operation with a top shutter-speed dial and a rear ISO dial in place of the LCD, and positioned in same manner as the company's film cameras. As with all M-series cameras, it sports a coupled rangefinder with a 0.68x bright-line viewfinder that works with numerous M-mount lenses, each with manual aperture and focus. An additional thumb wheel is available on the rear for making needed adjustments to the select few settings remaining in the camera, including exposure compensation. Along with this, the body is constructed of magnesium and aluminum with a leather covering, as well as a brass top panel and base. Additionally, its black-lacquered finish will age beautifully with use.

Leica M-D (Typ 262) Digital Rangefinder Camera

  • 24MP Leica MAX Full-Frame CMOS Sensor
  • Maestro Image Processor
  • Minimalist Design; No Rear LCD Screen
  • Stills-Only Operation
  • Rangefinder Focusing
  • Optical 0.68x-Magnification Viewfinder
  • Manually-Controlled ISO 200-6400 Dial
  • Up to 3 fps Shooting, DNG File Recording

Getting to the tech, Leica has equipped the Leica M-D (Typ 262) with a full-frame 24MP CMOS sensor that can operate at sensitivities of ISO 200-6400. It shoots only in lossless compressed DNG raw files, to guarantee that photographers will have the most information to work from later on. Users can also shoot continuously at 3 fps and benefit from a 1GB buffer for extended shooting at these speeds. A hot shoe is available for using an external flash, and the camera accepts SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards.

With a design reminiscent of a classic film rangefinder, the M-D (Typ 262) may be just the camera for photography purists, as well as those looking to move back to simpler times, and focus solely on making great images.
