Cooley Adds Life Sciences Patent Partner in London

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - May 03, 2016) - Cooley is again bolstering its UK office with the arrival of Colm Murphy, a highly respected IP partner with more than 20 years of experience. Murphy joins as a member of Cooley's patent counseling & prosecution practice.

Murphy, formerly a partner at Venner Shipley in its chemical and life sciences practice, is a European Patent Attorney and a Chartered Patent Attorney with a practice covering a broad range of complex IP matters in the life sciences arena. Murphy has strong relationships with clients in the biochemical, pharmaceutical and medical device fields. His practice covers drafting and prosecuting patent applications, European Patent Office oppositions and appeals, freedom-to-operate clearances - as well as advising on IP portfolio/risk management strategies and IP monetization.

In August 2015, Cooley officially launched its UK patent practice with the arrival of three patent practitioners from Mintz Levin - a move that was spearheaded by US-based transatlantic patent partner Ivor Elrifi, also formerly of Mintz.

"I've known of Cooley's market-leading US life sciences patent capabilities for many years and the firm is gaining the same reputation in the UK," Murphy said. "I'm looking forward to enhancing Cooley's international patent practice and contributing to its growth in London."

"Colm's arrival strengthens our UK patent capabilities and our comprehensive global life sciences practice," said Justin Stock, managing partner of Cooley in the UK. "He has a proven track record of success representing clients in high-profile oppositions before the European Patent Office and providing proactive and commercial solutions in complex matters."

Murphy received his LLM in IP Litigation from Nottingham Law School; his MSc in IP Law from Queen Mary University of London; and his BA in Natural Sciences from Trinity College Dublin. He has been ranked as a Band 1 patent attorney in Chambers.

Since opening the London office in January 2015 with 19 partners, Cooley has announced the arrival of eight additional partners including Stephen Rosen and Natasha Kaye from Olswang; life sciences partners John Wilkinson and Nicola Maguire from Reed Smith; Paula Holland from WilmerHale; Louise Delahunty from Sullivan & Cromwell; John Clark from Mayer Brown; and now Colm Murphy from Venner Shipley.
