SAN FRANCISCO, CA --(Marketwired - May 05, 2016) - Instacart (, the fast-growing retail delivery service whose personal shoppers hand pick and deliver items from trusted local stores, announced today its first expansion into North Carolina. As of today, Charlotte, N.C. residents can order from Whole Foods Market, Food Lion, Harris Teeter Supermarket, Costco, BJ's Wholesale Club and Publix, and have their groceries delivered straight to their doorsteps in as little as one hour.

Originally launched in San Francisco and since expanded to 21 metropolitan areas, Instacart has fundamentally changed the traditional delivery space by connecting customers with personal shoppers who shop for and deliver grocery and beverage orders in as little as one hour.

"After receiving incredible demand from the community and retail partners, we're excited to expand our service into Charlotte," said Apoorva Mehta, Founder and CEO of Instacart. "As part of this launch, we want all of the Charlotte community to know that Instacart is wholly committed to providing our customers and shoppers with an inclusive and nondiscriminatory environment. We are therefore proud to stand with many other businesses in our opposition to the discriminatory provisions of House Bill 2 and have signed on to the open letter from Human Rights Campaign opposing this law."

Instacart's initial delivery area in Charlotte includes 10 zip codes: 28282, 28280, 28202, 28203, 28204, 28209, 28207, 28205, 28211, 28210.

"Our customers love the convenient way to receive Whole Foods Market groceries, and we're proud to offer this service to our Charlotte community," said Jeff Jenkins, Whole Foods Market's global executive coordinator of digital strategy. "We view this as an extension of what we're known for and what we're good at, which is providing our customers with great service and easy access to high quality, fresh groceries whenever they need them."

How Instacart works: Customers go online to or open the Instacart mobile app on their iPhone or Android device, select their city and store, add items to a virtual cart, and then choose a delivery window (within one hour, within two hours, or some scheduled time in the future) and check out. An Instacart Personal Shopper accepts the order on his/her smartphone, uses the Instacart Shopper app to guide them through shopping, and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe.
