Experts Urge Teachers and Parents to Unite to Help Children Succeed in Mathematics

BLOOMINGTON, IN--(Marketwired - May 09, 2016) - Solution Tree, a premier educational publisher and professional development provider, has announced the release of a powerful new title -- Balancing the Equation: A Guide to School Mathematics for Educators and Parents -- copublished with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

In the resource, authors Matthew R. Larson and Timothy D. Kanold contend that educators and parents are critical partners in the effort to ensure children learn the mathematics skills they need for success in school and beyond. They tackle popular misconceptions and misguided discourse about mathematics education and draw on peer-reviewed research about instruction that can significantly increase student achievement.

"We believe mathematics teaching and learning must be improved ... the future of the United States depends on it," write Larson and Kanold. "There is a clear need to teach mathematics at a deeper level so students understand the underlying concepts and are able to transfer their understanding and skills to solve problems."

Part I of the title is comprised of three chapters for educators, while Part II includes two chapters for parents. Each chapter ends with reflection questions readers can use to review the book's important points. The resource also contains an appendix that lists additional resources and tools parents can use to help their children develop the mathematics skills they need for long-term success.

"Larson and Kanold present compelling evidence that the needs of the 21st century student demand a new approach to mathematics curriculum and instruction," said educational expert and best-selling author Richard DuFour. "Those who believe that schools must prepare students for their futures, rather than our pasts, will find this book a powerful tool to guide their work. I highly recommend it."

John SanGiovanni, coordinator for elementary mathematics for Howard County Public Schools in Maryland, added, "Coming from trusted leaders in mathematics education, this book is a must-have for any administrator, educator, or parent. It is an essential tool for answering the hard questions parents and teachers ask about mathematics education."
