WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - June 02, 2016) -  On June 4-11, NeighborWorks America and its network of local organizations will mark the 33rd annual NeighborWorks Week, a weeklong celebration in which thousands of volunteers come together to help make their communities healthy, sustainable places. Groups around the country are holding more than 200 events where thousands of neighbors and volunteers are getting engaged in community improvement projects. The events include rehabbing and repairing homes, beautifying parks, conducting neighborhood tours, and hosting events that educate and inform residents about financial literacy, homeownership and more. "Creating Opportunity" is this year's theme.

"NeighborWorks Week is our way of showing how people can transform communities," said Paul Weech, president and chief executive officer of NeighborWorks America. "Residents, civic and business leaders, and organizations like NeighborWorks members can come together and improve people's lives."

This year, the Citi Foundation is NeighborWorks America's national partner for NeighborWorks Week. In addition to a financial commitment, Citi volunteers are joining forces with NeighborWorks organizations across the country to support various projects during Citi's flagship volunteer program, Global Community Day, on June 11.

"The Citi Foundation is a long-term supporter of NeighborWorks in their efforts to create economic opportunities for residents in communities across the country," said Brandee McHale, president of the Citi Foundation. "In addition to being a national supporter of this year's NeighborWorks Week, hundreds of Citi employees will work alongside community members to make a difference in the cities where they live and work."

A few examples of this year's NeighborWorks Week events are:

• Detroit, MI: Southwest Solutions will host its annual Southwest Detroit Neighborhood Beautification Day (NBD), a volunteer event dedicated to improving the Southwest Detroit community and other neighborhoods where Southwest Solutions is engaged.
• Phoenix, AZ: For the second year, Trellis will hold its 'Good Neighbor' Front Porch Bench NeighborWorks Week kick-off. The organization will purchase a dozen wooden benches that will be decorated by local artists. Completed benches will be donated to persons nominated as 'good neighbors' by residents throughout the Trellis market.
• Miami, FL: Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida and volunteers will work together to clean, paint, and set up furniture to transform a classroom into a "literacy lounge" for students at a local elementary school.
• New York, NY: Asian Americans for Equality and volunteers will partner with high school students from two local high schools. Volunteers will beautify the public park by cleaning up garbage, repainting the playground fence, and planting new plants.
• St. Louis, MO: Volunteers will join Better Family Life and Beyond Housing in a clean-up effort along Page Boulevard, the central commercial corridor.
