Parks Associates: More Than 50% of U.S. Broadband Households Will Have a Smart Home Controller by 2020

Research Firm's NUMBERS(TM) Service Provides Forecasts for Sales and Adoption of Smart Home Controllers, IP Cameras, and Home Security for the U.S., Europe, and Asia

DALLAS, TX--(Marketwired - Jul 18, 2016) - Parks Associates today announced three new NUMBERS™ products focused on key IoT categories, including U.S. and global forecasts for IP cameras, home security, and smart home controllers through 2020. The firm estimates nearly 24% of U.S. broadband households will have an IP camera by 2020, while more than 50% will have a smart home controller and 26% will have a home security system.

"Companies such as Samsung are beginning to embed smart home controllers into their consumer entertainment products, meaning consumers who buy a smart TV or smart appliance will be bringing these solutions into their homes, often without understanding the full extent of their capabilities," said Tom Kerber, Director, Research, Home Controls & Energy, Parks Associates. "These smart home capabilities will come into play as consumers adopt other smart home devices, such as smart lighting and IP cameras."

Parks Associates research shows:

  • Unit sales of IP cameras will reach nearly 6 million in 2016, including 3.2 million first-time sales.
  • By 2017, the number of replacement or additional IP camera sales will exceed the number of first-time sales.
  • Approximately one-fifth of U.S. broadband households own a smart home device, and over 40% are planning to purchase one in 2016.

"The number of households with home security will top 30 million by 2019, with the majority of systems being professionally monitored," Kerber said. "This category will see steady growth through 2020 as interactive services and home controls extend the value proposition of home security and expand the market."

Parks Associates builds its forecasts upon core numbers with specifics based on product or service type. NUMBERS™ includes historical data and five-year forecasts for the United States, other countries, regions, and the rest of the world.
