NEW YORK, NY --(Marketwired - August 23, 2016) - For the past 20 years, eCommerce websites have used SSL encryption technology to guard a shopper's personal information from hackers and eavesdroppers during the checkout process. Last week, B&H Photo implemented the secure protocol on its entire website, ensuring users the best protection no matter what page they are browsing. B&H Photo Video is one of the first eCommerce stores to make this transition across its entire website.

HTTPS is simply the standard HTTP protocol with added SSL/TLS encryption. This encryption layer verifies that users are talking directly to the server they think they are talking to, instead of a lurking third party. It's often referred to as a "digital handshake," and B&H Photo is happy the transition is complete, after four long months.

"It was a very difficult project, but it was also a no-brainer," said Joel Brown, a B&H project manager tasked with the transition. "There's nothing better than seeing that little green padlock in your browser search bar. Customers are the most important part of any business, and now ours will have the best protection against cyber attacks."

Although more websites are starting to make the switch, the majority have not. As of March, 79 of the web's top 100 non-Google sites did not deploy HTTPS by default. This could be for a variety of reasons, including incompatibility with ad networks and a lack of development resources.

About 31.8 million U.S. consumers had their credit cards breached in 2014, more than three times the number affected in 2013. There is no official data for 2015 yet, but it is expected to eclipse 2014's mark.

"The internet today is so different from the internet 10 years ago," said Brown. "Cyber attacks are more prevalent and more intricate, and it's time for websites to combat this appropriately. B&H will continue to be at the forefront of cyber security. What good is online shopping if it puts customers at risk?"
