New 3D Mammography Can Diagnose Breast Cancer Earlier

Center for Diagnostic Imaging Brings First Breast Tomo to St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD, MN--(Marketwired - September 20, 2016) - Center for Diagnostic (CDI) announces it is the first St. Cloud facility to offer 3D mammography -- called breast tomosynthesis -- for breast cancer screening.

Breast tomosynthesis produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast tissue detail in a way not possible before. Studies have found that 3D mammography finds cancers earlier than traditional 2D mammography alone, with a 27 percent increase in cancer detection and 40 percent increase in invasive cancer detection.

"Early detection of cancer can dramatically improve a woman's chance at surviving breast cancer and 3D mammography improves the rate of early detection," says Ryan Wippler, MD, CDI breast radiologist. "We believe this can save lives."

According to Dr. Wippler, breast tomosynthesis can benefit all screening and diagnostic mammography patients and is especially valuable for women receiving a baseline screening, those who have dense breast tissue and women with a personal history of breast cancer. The 3D mammogram is very similar to a traditional mammogram and only takes a few seconds for each view with no additional compression of the breast required.

CDI provides a full range of imaging care for screening and diagnostics including ultrasound, mammography, 3D mammography and biopsies. The center also provides free cancer risk screenings following annual mammograms to help determine risks of breast cancer and offers evening appointments to make it convenient for women to get their annual mammograms. Patients who would like to schedule their next mammogram can call 320-251-0609.
